None of us consider prisons as safe places, but not all of the prisons are regarded as miserable. Prison is a place where inmates are kept as punishment for their bad acts. Some of the prisoners do need severe punishment for their extreme cruel behavior. The people are locked in the prisons for several years, depending upon the seriousness of their crime. 10. Stanley Prison, Hong Kong
It is one of the six maximum security facilities in Hong Kong. This prison was built in 1937. Here between 1946 and 1966, about 120 criminals were executed in the gallows. The prison has become the part of the Stanley Internment Camp. It is one of the most torturing places of Hong Kong. China who had tried to cross the border were also kept here for many years.
9. Attica Correctional Facility, New York
This prison was built in 1930. Here some of the most dangerous prisoners have had been kept. This became infamous due to the Attica Prison riot on September 9, 1971. In those days, the prisoners asked for better living conditions. According to an estimate, over 2000 inmates rebelled and seized the prison.
8. Montelupich Prison, Cracow, Germany

This prison is spread in an approximate area of 1,200 acres. It is dangerous because of subjecting the prisoners to the unspeakable squalor. It holds various political and social criminals, and here they are beaten and tortured mentally. Sometimes they are left here to death.
4. Butyrka Prison, Moscow, Russia
This is one of the largest prisoners in the world. It is situated in Russia, and has held 20,000 inmates during the Great Purge. Many of the prisoners were executed after investigations. Here the inmates once tried to protest against the cruel conditions. About one hundred prisoners are kept in a cell of ten people.

Notorious for human rights offenses, this prison has become a symbol of malnutrition, overcrowding, and rat infestations. It is situated in Equatorial Guinea. Here the prisoners are kept to die from chronic diseases. Inmates are in constant fear of being tortured and have to face prolonged beatings, which also become the reason of their deaths.
1. San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima, Peru
The toughest prison in South America, it was constructed to lock around 2400 inmates, but now has over 7000. This prison has a very lax environment where inmates are able to sell anything from gadgets to drugs. Those who acted severe crimes are tortured here both by police and other prisoners. Committing suicides, and murdering someone are very common things in this prison.
